Top Ten #3

Hosted by Broke and Bookish.

This weeks topic:   Most Intimidating Books (might be intimated by size, content, that everyone else loves it but you are sure you won't etc).
These are books I am pulling from my to-read list.
I don't know if these are ultimately my top ten but these are ten that fulfill the criteria.  As usual-no particular Priority order.
The Tale of Genji
Why:  1135 Pages!  I have heard this is such a great novel for 11th Century Japanese Culture.  Yes it was written in the 11th century so the writing, even translated and concepts may not always be easy to grasp but I am still determined to read this one day.
A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, #1)
Why:  I really want to read this, but one, is is nearly 900 pages and each book that follows is long too!  While there are currently only 5 books out, I know there are at least 3 more he is planning on and possibly written...

The Eye of the World (Wheel of Time, #1)
Why:  Again, 800-1000 pages per book and it is a 14 book series!  This will take a good chunk of my time to read all these!

The Clan of the Cave Bear (Earth's Children, #1)
Why:  While this series is ntot all long as the last two, it is still 6 books at around 600 pages each.  I have heard mixed thought on this series. Some love it, others say they move too slow, and even if it is good slow can really drag me down with books this long.

Gone with the Wind
Why:  I loved the movie, but it was long!  So it the book at over 1000 pages!

The Pillars of the Earth (The Pillars of the Earth, #1)
Why: While I love Medieval England, and it is only 2 books to the series, it is still approximately 1000 pages each book and more a historical drama.
Roots: The Saga of an American Family
Why:  I want to read this for the value it holds to the world but it is not normally my cup of tea.  And it isn't short either!
Dune (Dune Chronicles, #1)

Why:  Another semi-lengthy series.  I heard it has a lot of detail in it.  The movie sure did!  Still, I WILL read this one day.

A is for Alibi (Kinsey Millhone, #1)
Why:  She is working on covering every letter of the alphabet for this series!  26 books!
The Gunslinger (The Dark Tower, #1)
Why: Another somewhat lengthy series.  Not too bad, but with all the series I already have going on, I hate to add another, but I really want to read this one!

  2. I forgot to add Gone with the Wind on my list...

Loved A Game of Thrones, The Pillars of the Earth and Dune. I also finally got around to The Eye of the World last year; it's one of those books you hear so often about in the fantasy genre but never really got around to...

  3. Nice list. I'm seeing Game of Thrones on my others and yes they are huge and it took me a entire summer to read the 5 novels and it was so worth it.

    1. I really want to. Especially after seeing the series. Its just big plus I want him to get further along. I hate waiting for books in a series. Anything over a year is too long. Thanks for stopping by!

  4. I like the Game of Thrones show but have no real desire to read the books. It would be interesting to see what changes were made for the show though.

    1. I have the first 2 books before the show ever came to be but the book size kept me at bay. And for now I am contend with the show although I plan to read the books at some time, since books are almost always better than the movie/show. Thanks for stopping by!

  5. Jordan is one of my all-time favorite authors. I love the Wheel of Time Series so much that the characters invaded my dreams!

Game of Thrones is definitely worth the time it will take to read it. And you don't have to worry about taking your time reading the first 5 books because it'll most likely be another 10 years before he finishes the series! If you'd like, you can check out my review of Game of Thrones (book 1) here: http://maechs.wordpress.com/2013/05/21/a-game-of-thrones-by-george-r-r-martin-book-1-of-a-song-of-ice-and-fire/

    1. I started the first Wheel of time book years ago, and a friend borrowed it before I could finish. By the time I got it back, I went from 3 books to 9. And I heard the series wasn't finished. So I stopped for awhile but have been wanting to give it a go lately.
For Game of Thrones, that 10 years is why I am not is a rush. I hate waiting for the next book. When it goes too long then I have to go back and reread previous books to have all the details fresh in my mind. And I don't know if that is a series I want to constantly reread ever few years. thanks for stopping by. Off to go see your review now. :)
